When Andreas Berre Eriksen as a PhD student was at a traffic fair in Nyborg and checking his emails, he initially thought that someone was playing a trick on him. A major Danish telecommunications company had found Ambolt via a contact form on its website and wanted help analysing and structuring millions of support emails using AI.
"I thought it was one of our friends playing a prank on us. At the time, Ambolt was mostly just a side project we had started as students, and the website clearly reflected that it was made by students with more enthusiasm than branding experience," he says.
The inquiry was genuine. The telecommunications company was facing a task that had to be solved quickly, and for Andreas Berre Eriksen and current co-owner Kent Munthe Caspersen, it became a turning point. They now had to decide whether Ambolt should remain a side project, or whether they wanted to commit fully.
They chose the latter. Today, Ambolt has 18 employees and develops advanced AI solutions for areas where large volumes of data need to be transformed into something that people can actually use.
One project that signigicantly boosted the business was during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the company developed an AI-based pandemic management platform for the Norwegian healthcare system. This streamlined the management of the Norwegian vaccination programme by around 50 percent.
Today, the company helps a Danish Superliga club, among others, make player data more accessible to coaches and analysts. In addition, they are developing AI tools for the healthcare sector, including AI-based solutions that can assist general practitioners with drafting patient records .
Common to the tasks is that AI should not stand alone, but be part of solutions that work in practice.
"For us, it is not just about developing models, but about understanding the problem, the data and the professional context in which the technology must operate. That is why it is essential for us to collaborate with professionals in the areas we work with," says Andreas Berre Eriksen.
The story of Ambolt began ten years ago in a group room at the Department of Computer Science at AAU, where five students shared a common interest in machine learning long before AI became mainstream. Their desire to continue working with the technology eventually led to the founding of the company.
"We just thought it was a really exciting technology. We did not have a grand master plan that AI would take off. We just wanted to work with something we thought was cool," says Andreas Berre Eriksen.
Since then, technology has gone from a niche field to something everyone is talking about. However, at Ambolt, the core ambition remains the same: to use AI to solve real-world problems.
Ambolt is entering a new phase of growth. At the beginning of 2026, the company achieved ISO 27001 certification, secured a strategic investment of DKK 9 million and gained access to a fully Danish-hosted AI infrastructure. This marks an important step in the ambition to become a leading Scandinavian player in human-centric AI, while also contributing to strengthening Denmark’s position as an AI nation.
The connection to AAU continues to play a significant role in the company. Most of the employees are AAU graduates, and Ambolt collaborates with the university on various development projects.
