Denmark and the US state of Massachusetts are strengthening cooperation between companies, research institutions and public actors on both sides of the Atlantic. Professor Brian Vad Mathiesen, Department of Sustainability and Planning and Professor Jakob Stoustrup, Department of Electronic Systems were part of the Danish delegation that was in Massachusetts to enter into an agreement with the state.

The economic partnership agreement will strengthen scientific, technological and commercial ties, especially in life science, health, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence and green energy.

"The agreement creates a common framework for closer cooperation. While Massachusetts is a global leader in life science, Denmark – and AAU – can be a strong partner in energy systems and green technologies," says Professor Brian Vad Mathiesen.

He highlights smart energy systems, district heating, electrification, integration of offshore wind and Power-to-X as areas where AAU can contribute with both research and practical experience.

A collaboration with deep roots

The new agreement between Denmark and Massachusetts does not stem from a sudden initiative, but from a collaboration that goes back a decade. Among other things, AAU has been an active part of the Cross Atlantic Network for System Integration (CANSI) – a network that for a number of years has brought together researchers and actors in energy systems across the Atlantic.

"CANSI has played a direct role in the development of the new agreement. Strong relations have been built between Massachusetts and Denmark, and that history was clearly reflected in the interest and goodwill shown us," says Professor Jakob Stoustrup, a member of the delegation representing AAU's Mission for Sustainable Energy.

Great prospects for future cooperation

According to Brian Vad Mathiesen, from the Danish perspective the agreement means a faster path from contact to concrete collaborations. This means easier access to decision-makers, better matches between companies and universities, and more joint projects successfully realized.

Jakob Stoustrup agrees and expects close cooperation across the entire Mission for Sustainable Energy.

"There was a surprisingly large interest from the American side in cooperating much more extensively. Denmark is recognized for unique competencies in the energy area, in terms of technology, regulation and practical solutions. This makes Danish universities and companies very attractive partners."
