Aalborg University (AAU) is actively engaged in improving waste management as a key part of its climate efforts and sustainability strategy. As part of AAU’s Climate Plan 2030, waste and resources are one of nine focus areas. The university aims to reduce total waste by 30% by 2030 and ensure that at least 60% of waste is genuinely recycled.

Since 2020, AAU has have a clear waste separation scheme that includes sorting of plastic, glass, food cartons, hazardous waste, textiles, metal, paper, and bio-waste. The system is based on the principle that waste should pass through as few hands as possible. Individual waste bins have been replaced by centralized waste stations across campus, improving sorting efficiency and encouraging healthier habits among students and staff.

In 2024, AAU allocated additional resources to this area, including a dedicated staff member responsible for waste analysis and development in collaboration with waste handlers. This strengthens the university’s ability to document recycling efforts, improve sorting practices, and develop action plans to phase out single-use products and promote reuse and circular economy principles.

Aalborg University also has a policy for handling hazardous waste, ensuring proper sorting, storage, and disposal in accordance with current legislation and environmental standards. The policy covers items such as chemicals, batteries, electronics, and laboratory waste, and is supported by clear guidelines and training for relevant staff.

The university’s approach is part of a broader strategy where AAU acts as a living lab, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to develop and implement sustainable solutions. The focus includes reducing waste volumes, increasing recycling rates, and promoting circular economy practices.

Reduction of Plastic Waste as a Subgoal in AAU’s Climate Plan

Aalborg University has initiated concrete actions to reduce the use of single-use products and plastic in its operations. In 2024, the university’s catering provider, Jespers Torvekøkken, reduced the use of disposable items, including plastic, and has set an ambitious target of an 80% reduction by the end of 2025. This initiative supports the university’s overall goal of minimizing the environmental impact of its daily operations.

As part of this effort, an agreement was made in 2024 with the company Vytal to supply circular packaging to the university. This packaging is designed for reuse and contributes to reducing plastic consumption, minimizing plastic waste, and increasing the recycling of plastic products. The agreement with Vytal marks an important step toward a more sustainable and resource-efficient operation.

These initiatives are an integrated part of AAU’s climate plan and support the university’s efforts to meet the national climate targets by 2030. The reduction of plastic waste is thus a concrete subgoal in the university’s strategy for green transition and sustainability.
