Students develop a green alternative to airline liquids bags

Three tourism students, Simone Maria Bovien, Annika Lisberg and Line Hørlück Eriksen, want to influence travellers to behave more sustainably. Together, they have started the company STEP where the first product is a biodegradable and home-compostable alternative to the legally recommended plastic bag for liquids in carry-on luggage on flights.

The idea of developing sustainable bags for airline liquids arose from an innovation course in the tourism programme. Simone Maria Bovien, Annika Lisberg and Line Hørlück Eriksen took counts in the security areas of Kastrup Airport showing that on average a third of passengers use one or more bags. At Kastrup Airport alone, 15 million travellers went through security in 2018. Europe having over 300 airports made the three students see the potential in developing an alternative product.

- We know from consumer surveys that more Danes want to minimize their plastic consumption and demand greener products. With our sustainable alternative to the ziplock plastic bag, we enable airports to brand themselves on sustainable operations, reduce the consumption of single-use plastic and create value for air travellers who want to move their carbon footprint in a slightly more sustainable direction, says Simone Maria Bovien.
