About the PhD thesis
Existing literature reveals that alcohol consumption among women of reproductive age and during pregnancy is prevalent. Through time, a large amount of research has been conducted in order to estimate the association of prenatal alcohol exposure and adverse outcome. However, for most outcomes investigated through observational studies, the association is still debatable.
Miscarriage frequently occurs and is estimated to affect 15% of couples, primarily during the first trimester. Though it has been highly investigated on the association between alcohol and miscarriage, no conclusion has been found. Likewise, with its rising prevalence, estimated to affect ~18 % of adult people worldwide infertility is a growing field of interest. Different modifiable lifestyle factors such as alcohol have been investigated, but no consensus has been reached.
This PhD dissertation aimed to identify characteristics of women drinking alcohol before and during pregnancy to target pre conceptional guidance and sanguinely prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes. We also aimed to investigate the association between alcohol and miscarriage in the first and second trimester, and the association of female alcohol consumption and fertility.
