About the PhD thesis

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) occurs more than 13 times daily in Denmark, and even though the mortality is high, the Danes are among the world's best at saving lives.

In 2021, 10 per 100,000 inhabitants survived an OHCA and an impressive 79% received cardiopulmonary resuscitation prior to ambulance arrival.

The field is unique because OHCAs often occur suddenly and unexpectedly, and as a consequence, the effort of the general public and volunteer responders can mean the difference between life and death, and even determine the quality of life after a successful resuscitation.

This means, that aside from ensuring a professional emergency medical service, and advanced in-hospital treatment, it is essential to prepare and equip the public and the volunteers as best possible.

This PhD thesis contributes to this mission by investigating sites of previous OHCAs, and utilizes this knowledge to identify areas in which to focus this task. This has formed the basis of an initiative with data-driven, coordinated, and strategic AED placement in the North Denmark Region.

Furthermore, the thesis explores the association between the effort made by the public and volunteers, and the life led after successful resuscitation.
