About the PhD thesis
Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) affects 1-2 percent of women, and
the incidence is rising. In only approximately 40 percent of the patients, an RPL risk factor can be found, while in the remaining group
of patients with no known cause, immunological abnormalities are
often found, and they are therefore suspected to be involved in the
pathogenesis of RPL.
This PhD thesis aimed to elaborate on immunological risk factors to
RPL and to test the efficacy of an immunomodulatory treatment with
intravenous immunoglobulin and prednisolone for RPL patients. The
PhD thesis includes five peer-reviewed articles.
Two cross-sectional studies evaluating:
-
The association between RPL and sex of older siblings
-
The association between RPL, HLA class II, and autoantibody positivity
Two combined cross-sectional and cohort studies evaluating:
-
The association between the combination of sex of firstborn child and HLA class II genotype and the pregnancy outcome in RPL patients
-
The association between mannose-binding lectin plasma level and RPL and the RPL prognosis
A study protocol for a double-blinded randomized controlled trial testing the effect of prednisolone and intravenous immunoglobulin versus
placebo for women with RPL undergoing artificial reproductive technology treatment.
