Abstract
The PhD thesis investigates the potential to mitigate Europe's dependence on imported fossil fuels while addressing the climate crisis through harnessing renewable energy from the North Sea. Specifically, the research assesses the potential for integrating large-scale offshore wind and renewable hydrogen production into the broader energy system, with a detailed feasibility study focused on the Danish North Sea energy hubs. The thesis delivers a comprehensive socio-economic and techno-economic analysis, addressing key challenges in energy system integration, decarbonisation pathways, and energy security, all framed within Europe's evolving geopolitical landscape.
A systematic literature review quantifies the role of hydrogen in future decarbonised European energy system. Utilising systems modelling and grounded in choice awareness, the thesis presents different pathways for hydrogen and hydrogen derived sustainable aviation fuel production. By comparing stand alone and system level perspectives, the thesis also presents different hydrogen export strategies from offshore energy hubs balancing economic competitiveness and strategic autonomy.
