A beacon in innovation, idea development, knowledge sharing and technological breakthroughs will soon be popping up at Frederik Bajers Vej 7 behind the Department of Electronic Systems.
The new building, to be named TECH Lab, will house the laboratories at the Department of Electronic Systems. Students, researchers and companies will have a modern setting for developing solutions to global challenges. In other words, TECH Lab will not only be a building, but also a living lab where theory meets practice and innovation has an opportunity to grow.
TECH Lab will promote innovation by giving researchers, teaching staff and companies joint access to advanced research infrastructure. According to Thomas Bak, Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, the new laboratory building will provide students and researchers with a modern, future-proofed, attractive setting that enables AAU to continue to conduct outstanding research and train world-class engineers.
"When we bring together laboratories, test facilities and workshops under one roof in a new laboratory building, we create a practical, interdisciplinary space where students, researchers and external partners can experiment, develop and test new solutions."
"As a department that closely partners with the business community and that does both basic and applied research, TECH Lab helps to underscore the responsibility we want to take in the ecosystem around research, education, innovation and business. Particularly in the space field, there is great potential that we aim to unlock with Tech Lab" says Mads Græsbøll Christensen, Head of the Department of Electronic Systems.
According to the schedule, construction of the TECH Lab will start in December 2026, and in January 2028, AAU will take over a building with a low CO2 footprint, efficient land use, sustainable material use and recycling. This means that TECH Lab will live up to the fundamental principles of the climate plan, both in terms of construction and use.
It will help move us as a society towards a sustainable and climate-neutral future. Make the climate-friendly choice visible in the day-to-day life of students, staff and guests at AAU. Involve and engage research environments in the development and implementation of climate action. And ensure that AAU facilities, processes and data are available to staff and students for developing and testing new sustainable ideas and solutions.

Facts
TECH Lab will be part of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design which consists of the Department of Electronic Systems, the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Sustainability and Planning, and the Department of Architecture, Design and Media Technology.
The new building will be approximately 1,700 m² and will be build on the site where the former pavilion buildings Fredrik Bajers Vej 7F and 7G were located.
The construction area is a brownfield site which is a piece of land that has previously been developed and potentially contaminated. The area around Fredrik Bajers Vej 7 is classified as V1, which means that contamination is suspected. When AAU builds on a brownfield site, it is better for the environment than building on 'virgin land' where there have previously been no buildings or industry.
The majority of TECH Lab is financed by the government's Unilab funds for the renovation and renewal of university laboratories.
