Agustín Granados Mateos blev færdiguddannet i 2017 som civilingeniør i Sustainable Design. Under uddannelsen havde han et praktikophold i det firma, som han skrev sit speciale for. Efterfølgende fik han job i samme virksomhed.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STUDY  SUSTAINABLE DESIGN?    

"When I enrolled in the Master’s programme, I was working as an architect in Tanzania designing the new AGA KHAN university campus in Dar es Salaam. I realised that something was missing in my career. I needed to combine my profile with a humanistic engineering approach where sustainability and stakeholder involvement would come into play."

HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE YOUR STUDY TIME AT AALBORG UNIVERSITY?  

"Aalborg University helped me go through the different subjects in many ways. Facilities like the model room, library, canteen, etc. were used in many exercises during the programme. Since day one, we were involved with several companies through our semester projects. Therefore, it required the use of resources in order to make prototypes, study rooms to work and access to documentation through the virtual library." 

DID YOU DO AN INTERNSHIP? IF YOU DID, WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT?  

"I did an internship in Rambøll. During my internship as a sustainable designer, I worked with both quantitative and qualitative approaches in problem solving and idea development of sustainable, integrated architectural and urban design.

I developed different masterplan projects for municipalities in Denmark, international architectural competitions and some smaller residential projects. I was involved in a team with landscape architects, lighting designers, engineers, ethnologists and sociologists. In order to integrate a holistic building design, it was necessary to create a platform like for example workshops, design games, informal meetings etc.  where all these professions could communicate and learn from each other. I also got the chance to know more from other departments at the Rambøll headquarter in Ørestad. I realised how much structural isolation there is when working cross-disciplinary, which makes it even more important to use sustainable designers within this issue.

I do recommend doing an internship. For me it was very helpful in order to prepare myself for when I finished my studies. The contact with real projects, colleagues and clients gave me the core elements for later." 

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR FIRST JOB?  

"After doing my internship, the company still wanted to collaborate with me and I decided to do my thesis with them for the next 5 months. It was just a few days before my submission when the company offered me a permanent contract." 

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT JOB SITUATION AND WHAT DOES IT ENTAIL?  

"I work as an architect/ sustainable engineer consultant, and I work with several types of projects: Residential, public institutions and rehabilitation." 

WHICH SKILLS FROM YOUR EDUCATION CAN YOU USE IN YOUR PRESENT JOB?  

"During my studies, we used co-design, participatory design and stakeholder analyses, all of which I use today when we have workshops with clients and other departments in the office. The more humanistic skill I developed during my master gave me another point of view, in somehow it broadened my field of action considering more aspects which I did not pay attention to before." 

IF YOU NEED TO HIGHLIGHT A PROJECT YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN, WHICH ONE SHOULD IT BE?  

During my thesis I worked, together with my colleague Torben Kulasingam, in a term called Liveability which it put in practice the different ways to collaborate in between disciplines in an international engineering organisation. This project helped me get accepted into one of the most significant workshop I have been in. UNLEASH (https://unleash.org/) where 1000 people from 129 countries were during 10 days working with sustainable development solutions for 2030.
