From Grounded Theory to Situational Analysis: What’s New? Why? How? Public Lecture by Adele E. Clarke, University of California, San Francisco

Situational analysis (SA) is a method of qualitative inquiry which extends Straussian constructivist grounded theory. Methodologically, SA moves from Strauss’s conditional matrix to a new situation-centered matrix, shifting focus from action and context to the broader situation as whole and its relations. Theoretically, SA draws on Chicago school ecologies, Strauss’s social worlds/arenas theory, Foucault’s discourse studies, Deleuze and Guattari’s rhizomes and assemblages, and science studies’ strategy of taking the nonhuman explicitly into account. Doing SA involves making maps of the situation, of its social worlds and arenas, and of positions taken in debates in the situation, and analyzing the relations portrayed in each map. SA also introduces new critical tools including analyzing implicated actors and actants, collective power relations, and boundary objects. By focusing on the broader situation, SA enhances visibility of epistemic diversity, democratizing representation from the margins. It can also enhance collaboration through cooperative mapping. Last, SA not only tolerates the messy complexities of life but relishes engaging and explicating them.
