"Toward Predictive Modelling in Breeding of Tetraploid Potato”
An increasing population and stronger focus on reduction of pesticides challenge the production of food crops and new varieties are in high demand, requiring the breeding stations to implement faster techniques. In potato, molecular markers have been developed since the late 1980s and different techniques have been developed to accelerate genetic gain and face the challenge. However, many techniques require large training populations and/or expensive methods.
In using predictive modelling based on haplotype structure in few genomic loci, we have shown proof of concept of utilizing historic phenotype data, known molecular markers and a small training population to predict phenotypic values of elite tetraploid potato. With this we have bypassed the bottleneck of phenotyping a training population and propose implementable methodologies for the breeding of tetraploid potatoes.
