“Wireless Communications in Open-Pit Mines: From Radio Propagation to Network Deployment Strategies”
The mining industry is one of the verticals that has been gradually moving towards unmanned operations, requiring more from wireless networks in terms of coverage, capacity and reliability. Even though wireless networks have been used in this scenario for decades, there are still unexplored scenarios in surface mines, which present additional challenges to the deployment of wireless net-works, such as the continuous topographic variability.
This thesis investigates, by means of experimental work and simulation analysis, different deployment configurations in open-pit mines. In the first part of the thesis, large scale radio-propagation is investigated in macro and small cell deployments in sub-6GHz frequencies, by means of extensive measurement campaigns and modelling. An extension of an existing model is proposed and used in the second part of the thesis, which is dedicated to evaluating the network performance in different deployments and network features.
Finally, the performance results are put into the perspective of the cost of investments and of the costs associated with the downtime in an autonomous mine.
