MiDAS Global Database Workshop

MiDAS Global Database Workshop

20.06.2019 kl. 08.30 - 21.06.2019 kl. 15.00

MiDAS (Microbial Database for Activated Sludge) is a central collaborative workspace available for researchers and wastewater treatment practitioners to facilitate a better understanding of the microbial ecology of the engineered ecosystems of activated sludge plants, anaerobic digesters, and related wastewater treatment systems.

The ambition of the field guide (http://midasfieldguide.org/) is to summarize all knowledge about the physiology and ecology of the important microorganisms present in these systems. Integral to this goal is the ability to link an organism’s name with its putative function. To achieve this, a complete list of all microbes in these systems is necessary. Although originally based on a decade long study of Danish wastewater treatment plants and anaerobic digesters, MiDAS was expanded in 2018 to include microbes present in wastewater treatment systems and anaerobic digesters from all over the world. The aim of the global database project is to provide a (near) complete list of all microbes in the systems, and assign unique sequence IDs to these to facilitate a global common language for all future studies and to connect their identity and function in the MiDAS Field Guide.

During the workshop, the results from the MiDAS Global Database of wastewater treatment systems will be presented and discussed with special focus on the catalogue of microorganisms and new, expanded MiDAS taxonomy, interesting cases and practical application. Furthermore, Professor Tom P. Curtis (Newcastle University, United Kingdoms) and Dr. Rohan Williams (SCELSE, Singapore) will present time series data analyses.

The workshop is held at:

Aalborg University
Department of Chemistry and Bioscience
Fredrik Bajers Vej 7H, Auditorium 1.002 (ground level)
9220 Aalborg East
