Abstract

Bodily illusions have been used on the rehabilitation of painful conditions where patients may present with disruptions in the perception of size, temperature, and position of body parts. However, variability in response to therapy indicates that individual differences determine treatment effectiveness. There has been little consideration of the influence of embodiment of the viewed body part on outcomes associated with the technique; and it is possible that inter-subject variability in embodiment of a body part is contributing to inconsistency in study findings. This presentation will discuss findings of a sequence of experiments designed to investigate the effect of bodily illusions using mirrors and virtual reality on embodiment and pain perception in healthy human participants.
