A major challenge in sustainable development among small-scale family agriculture in Brazil is that local knowledge, traditions, and cultural activities linked to production systems are generally poorly understood or undervalued. Through interviews with small-scale producers in Southern Paraná and Northern Santa Catarina, our study documents the knowledge and perceptions associated with native forests and agroforestry production of erva-mate (yerba mate), a tree species native to Southern Brazil that is commonly consumed as a tea. These documented narratives and perceptions have begun a process in which various perspectives (ethnicities, generations, and classes) are incorporated into forest resource management models and agroforestry systems that are not only better adapted to local realities, but also value and integrate local ecological knowledge and community participation. By combining oral environmental history with ecological research, our analysis offers a deeper understanding of the cultural, social, and economic values associated with forests, as well as a better understanding of the economy, sociobiodiversity, and challenges to the continuation of family agriculture in these regions. Our goal is to support the sharing of knowledge related to food security, local culture, and biological heritage across communities as a means to strengthen community identity and traditional practices, particularly among youth and women, and develop strategies to optimize and expand sustainable agroecology and agroforestry across the landscape.
