ABSTRACT

Biofuels are seen as a future substitute of petroleum fuels. However, production of biofuels through thermochemical processes such as hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) faces many challenges for the implementation of technology. Hydrothermal liquefaction utilizes the properties of water at near critical conditions to convert biomass feedstocks or organic wastes into a raw bio-crude oil. Among the most important challenges, one can count: the diversity in biomass sources, pretreatment of lignocellulosic feedstocks to create pumpable feedstocks for continuous processing, upgrading/refining of raw bio-crude oils, and blendability of bio- and petro-fuels.  

The aim of this PhD thesis is to demonstrate the following:

the effect of biomass composition on the distribution and quality of products resulting from HTL processing;
the effect of the pretreatment method on the distribution and quality of products resulting from HTL processing;
the ‘drop-in points’ of raw bio-crude oils in a standard oil refinery;
vacuum distillation of raw bio-crude oils and characterization of produced fuels;
and upgrading/refining of vacuum residues to finished fuels in the presence of supercritical water;

For this scope, various studies have been conducted, covering the overall process scheme for biofuels production: from biomass selection to HTL processing to downstream co-processing to biofuels production – the so-called ‘tree to tank’ path.
