TITLE OF THE THESIS

"Implementing Clinical Practice Guidelines into Everyday Practice - Potentials and Pitfalls".

SUBJECT OF THE LECTURE

Implementing clinical guidelines. Challenges and effects.

Summary from the thesis

Clinical practice guidelines, when based on best available evidence, have the potential to increase quality of care, however, these are often slowly implemented into everyday practice which incurs a risk of scarce resources gone to waste for the society and foregone health benefits for the patients. The primary aim of the dissertation was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of a multifaceted implementation strategy to increase general practitioners’ utilisation of guideline recommendations for management of low back pain. The economic evaluation showed that the multifaceted implementation strategy, in comparison with a usual strategy of dissemination, was cost saving, however, there was a risk of a modest loss in quality-adjusted life years for the patients and the results were sensitive to uncertainty.
