“Looking into a dataset of mobile web requests”

by Prof. Laurent Schumacher, University of Namur, Belgium

Thanks to the fact that Belgium is a densely populated country, and also lags behind in the roll-out of Long Term Evolution (LTE) / 4G, it is still possible to visit areas enjoying different Radio Access Technology (RAT) coverages within a limited territory. This presentation reports an analysis of a dataset of two million web requests collected through a field survey mostly performed in south-western Belgium and northern France. This analysis highlights the impact of Radio Access Network (RAN) conditions (signal strength, mobility) and settings (timers) on the canvas Page Load Time (cPLT) on the one hand, and the impact of the spreading of web sites across CDNs on the other hand.

Laurent Schumacher received his M.Sc. EE. degree from the Faculté Polytechnique de Mons, Belgium, in 1993, and his Ph.D. degree from the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium, in 1999. Since 2003 he has been a lecturer at UNamur, Belgium, after a post-doctoral stay at Aalborg Universitet, Denmark. His current research interests include crowd sensing and software defined networking applied to cellular networks.
